Ceramic iron straighteners have reportedly been the cause of an upsurge in scalp & skin burns to women who straighten their hair. The article ‘Women warned of hair iron dangers’ was published in the Sydney Sun-Herald newspaper on September 16th.
I was the main ‘expert opinion’ contributing to this piece. You can ‘read all about it’ at the articles page of my website. Follow this link.
Simply put though, I suggested any injuries sustained by the use of ceramic iron straighteners were the fault of the operator. These electrical devices would never pass regulatory approval if they were inherently unsafe.
Haste and inattentiveness are the overwhelming reasons for skin burns or other injury.
Various nutritional deficiencies will cause scalp hair shafts to become extremely dry, thin, and brittle. Hair shaft fracturing and breakage (split ends) will then readily occur when the duress of heat and pressure are added.
Where a woman is experiencing widespread hair breakage or loss, she should consult a qualified practitioner to assess her dietary habits and inner nutritional status.
Lastly – use the device as per the manufacturer’s instructions. More heat; more tension for longer periods of time will not necessarily provide a better result!
