Hair Loss Treatment Programs – A Comparison

By Tony Pearce RN.
Specialist Trichologist, National Trichology Services

Recently Tony Pearce, Specialist Trichologist for National Trichology Services, did a comparison audit of similar treatments offered for Male Androgenic Alopecia by both National Trichology Services and other major providers in the Sydney area. Below are the results of this comparison.

National Trichology Services

Total Cost:

  • Program I:
    6-8 weeks (for early-moderate hair loss) – $950

  • Program II:
    12-14 week intensive program
    (more extensive/long-standing hair loss) – $1800

This is a pricing & services-offered comparision only. Your hair loss problem may require some of these services, all of them, or none of them. This will be established at the time of consultation.

Qualifications/Experience of Consultant:

  • Internationally-acclaimed Specialist Trichologist +Registered Nurse

  • Australia’s leading female hair loss expert

Is a Detailed Client Clinical History taken?
(medical history, allergies, diet, hormones, & stress factors)

  • YES

Regular Progress Reviews:

  • YES

Services included in program:

  • Twice weekly laser therapy 6 weeks (Program I); or 12 weeks (Program II)
  • Advanced Minoxidil topical solution (formulation as appropriate to hair loss condition) for duration of program **
  • Hi-potency nutritional supplements specifically for follicle health & hair growth
  • All Natural ‘Sodium Lauryl Sulphate-free’ shampoo for everyday use
  • Blood test & Saliva hormone profile (where appropriate) & interpretation
  • Salivary hormone, Liver Detoxification, or Digestive Stool Analysis kits may incur small additional fee

**For optimum results Minoxidil should be “pulsed” (i.e.: solution strength & absorption agent altered every 4-6 months). Pricing differences of solution strengths may vary slightly.

All products developed & prepared by Mr. Arthur Chan, Australia’s foremost research pharmacist for hair loss & skin problems & a world authority on hair loss treatments.

Type/Class of Laser (LLLT):

Advanced Hair Studio

Total Cost:

  • $5,500.00 – 50% deposit & balance on commencing program. $4,950.00 if total amount paid ‘up front’

Duration:

  • Twelve months

Qualifications of Consultant:

  • Salesperson. Title: ‘Manager’

Is a Detailed Client Clinical History taken?
(incl. medical history, blood pressure, diet, stress factors)

  • NO

Quarterly Progress Reviews:

  • Not Discussed

Treatments incl. in program cost:

  • Twice weekly laser therapy for one month - once weekly for 2 months -once monthly for 9 months (25 laser treatments over 12 months)
  • Minoxidil 5% solution, Saw Palmetto (Serenoa) capsules, Serenoa shampoo available at additional cost

Type/Class of Laser (LLLT):

  • Laser Class 2

Choice Magazine’s comment (June 2003): “Value for Money? ... it’s open to doubt whether you’d get more regrowth with Advanced Hair’s lotion than from minoxidil (Rogaine) on its own. We’d be dubious about spending several thousand on the off-chance.”

Ashley & Martin

(Market St, Sydney office consultation on June 6th, 2007)

Total Cost:

  • $4432.00 paid over paid in installments, or $3832.00 when paid ‘up front’.

  • Eight months

Qualifications of Consultant:

  • National Manager’. Stated he was a Trichologist trained ‘in-house’ by Ashley & Martin doctors to “the highest standard”. No formal or recognised qualifications displayed.

Is a Detailed Client Clinical History taken?

  • a rudimentary health checklist only – not discussed by Consultant.

  • Shampoo & scalp cleanser.

Type/Class of Laser (LLLT):

  • Not discussed, but now selling ‘Sunetics’ laser combs (Bio-energy capacity 5Mw)

Choice Magazine’s comment (June 2003): “Value for Money? ... If you have moderate hair loss the minoxidil in Ashley & Martin’s treatment is likely to give you some benefit; everything else about it is open to doubt. Again, we’d save the money.”

I.H.R.B. (Institute of Hair Regrowth & Beauty)

(Consultation at Pitt Street office on June 6th, 2007)

Total Cost:

  • $4900 paid in installments over eleven months, or $3900 when paid ‘up front’.

Duration:

  • 12 months

Qualifications of Consultant:

  • Stated he had a Science Degree but no formal qualifications displayed.

Is a Detailed Client Clinical History taken?
(incl. diet, medical history, blood pressure, medications)

  • NO

Treatments incl. in program cost:

  • 12 X 100mls ‘Prescribed Specialized Topical Solution’ (Minoxidil + Retin A 0.025%)
  • 2 X 120 tablet 'DHT-blocking herb' (Saw Palmetto)
  • Shampoo X 8 bottles; Conditioner X 4; ‘Dermaclean’ scalp cleanser X 2
  • Progress reviews for 25 years!

Impressions of Consultation: Sam Cohen might be considered one of this industry’s ‘characters’. In 30 or 40 minutes with him I hardly got a word in during his grandiloquent performance. I felt very uncomfortable seated at his knee on a footstool like some child – this feeling being compounded by his constant slaps on my leg. He repeatedly referred to his competitors (+ others) as “those sons of bitches”, whilst his over-familiarity & bombast combined to deliver a sense of the non-professional.

He openly admits to altering medically-prescribed Minoxidil (+ Retin A) topical solution by adding “his curries” (12 Aruveydic herbs he says) to the solution. When quizzed on the legality of this he stated the Minoxidil "doesn't work without (his) curries”.

Clive Clinics

(Consultation - 46 Market Street, Sydney)

Total Cost:

  • $2620 (supplements at additional cost). $2300 if paid ‘up front’.

Duration:

  • 8 months

Qualifications of Consultant:

  • Sales consultant. As with A&M stated they received in-house trichology training.

Is a Detailed Client Clinical History taken?
(incl. diet, medical history, blood pressure, medications)

  • Yes

Treatments incl. in program cost:

  • Deep tissue massage with high frequency device
  • ‘Kankho’ Stimulant products (Azelaic Acid)
  • ‘Formulae Treatment’ (strengthens the hair root, increases follicle depth).
  • Shampoo range including scalp cleaners and Conditioner

Impressions of Consultation: Clive Clinics appear more professional & knowledgeable than some other hair loss centres. Their practice of ordering a ‘stand alone’ Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis would be limited value as a diagnostic tool (in my opinion) and the cost of $250 further adds to the total amount payable. Again it’s the ‘one treatment suits all’ approach that doesn’t fit the needs of most patients – women’s hair loss in particular.

Please note!
National Trichology’s ‘program costs’ are an illustration of what we believe consumers should expect to pay, & what services/products they should expect to get for their dollar. You may need all of these products, some of them, or none of them. Every client is assessed to their individual problem & the treatment it requires
